Dance Fight your way to a thinner you with Capoeira

Tired of trying to lose weight with exercise programs that fail? Perhaps the exercise itself is okay, but there's nothing fun or engaging to keep you going, so you lose interest and go back to your unhealthy, sedentary life.

Now, however, there is a fun new form of exercise that is gaining popularity around the world because of its benefits for the body and mind. You've probably been exposed to it on movies (Hally Berry in Catwoman), television and even commercials (Propel Fitness water and Mazda zoom-zoom song) without even realizing it. I'm talking about capoeira, the Brazilian martial art form.

Now before you click away and say "I'm too: old, inflexible, overweight, etc." consider this. J.J. Richards, a capoeirista from Austin, TX and co-owner of capoeiracapoiera , was close to 30 when he started practicing capoeira. He said that "you don't have to be in the 20 something club to enjoy playing capoeira. There are mestres (capoeira masters) in their mid 80's that can put younger people to shame. Just give it time and let your body have a chance to adapt." Mr. Richards also said that he "got a six-pack and excellent tone within a month. Once you settle in to the sport, it will tone every muscle in your body...even the ones you didn't know existed." There are other benefits beyond the physical, too. This sport provides something that home workout programs or even joining a gym can't...community.

Learning capoeira is all about working together with others who have the same goal. It's also inexpensive. Some schools offer classes for as low as $10 a session and the only equipment you need are some capoeira clothes. If you're ready to try something that could whip you into shape and even change your life, give this amazing martial art a try.
